In focus

A voice of the open sky

The Whistling Kite is often heard before it is seen. Its clear, carrying whistle accompanies long, relaxed circles above wetlands, farmland and open woodland. Sandy-brown plumage, patterned wings and a rounded tail give this adaptable bird a softer outline than many falcons, making it a rewarding raptor to learn to recognise.

Where to look

Widespread on mainland Australia; less common in Tasmania.
